Artificial intelligence - game playing.
The program plays Go and executes a set of commands to analyze Go positions.
Most input is in "SmartGo Format" (.sgf), a widely used de facto standard representation of Go games. A typical test involves reading in a game to a certain point, then executing a command to analyze the position.
Output is typically an ascii description of a sequence of Go moves.

There are no known portability problems remaining as of this writing (May 2005). The last portability problem fixed dealt was the nonstandard assumption of signed characters.
