GPC News -- An On-Line Natural

by Bob Cramblitt

The GPC News, formerly The GPC Quarterly, has joined the World Wide Web parade. This new publication is not simply an electronic version of the hardcopy newsletter. The electronic media -- with its hyperlinks and layers of information -- allows us to do some things that we could not do publishing on paper.

Getting Interactive

The biggest advantage is our new ability to reach a much larger audience -- thousands instead of tens. Readers now have the flexibility to access the information they are most interested in and display that information in a way that is most useful to them. Performance results can be displayed for all benchmark tests of systems from a single vendor, for example. Or, results can be grouped according to system price or hardware characteristics. Or, systems from several vendors can be compared for a specific benchmark test. It's interactive publishing at its best.

The electronic format could soon lead to more timely publication. Instead of results every quarter, we might be able to soon update results every month, or whenever vendors want to post results, as long as the results go through a verification process.

An On-line Natural

Unlike many newspapers and magazines that simply translate printed matter to the computer screen, the GPC News is a natural for the electronic format. Underlying database programs give users the options to use information in multiple ways and to connect to different vendors' home pages to receive more specific information on a system and its performance.

We think this electronic publication will better serve computer graphics users, vendors, analysts and the media in the future. If you have comments, contact Bob Cramblitt, editor of the GPC News, by phone (919-481-4599), fax (919-481-4639) or e-mail: cramco@interpath.com.
