The storage configuration consisted of 2 storage controllers connected in an active-active configuration. Each controller was connected to its own and partner's disks in a multi-path HA configuration. Each storage controller was the primary owner of 168 disks or 7 shelves (24 disks per shelf). A single disk pool or "aggregate" was created on each node which comprised of 7 RAID-DP raid groups, each composed of 21 data disks and 2 parity disks which held the data for the file-system. On each controller, a separate aggregate consisting of 3 disks in a single RAID-DP group was created to hold the Data ONTAP operating system files. Each node was allocated 4 spare disks. Two flexible volumes were then created on the data aggregate of each node for a total of 4 volumes. The flexible volumes are presented to clients as mount-points and files written to flexible volumes are striped across all the disks in the data aggregate. Each controller was the primary owner of 2 volumes in the data aggregate on that controller and in the event of a controller failure the partner controller would take over ownership and manage the volumes.

Network Configuration Notes

A single port from the dual-port 10 Gigabit Ethernet network adapter was configured on each storage controller to serve as the data port serving data. The active interfaces were configured to use jumbo frames and were connected to a Cisco Nexus 5548 switch providing connectivity to clients.

Benchmark Network

Each load generator was connected to Cisco Nexus 5548 switch via a single 10GbE port. Jumbo frames was set for all connection to the switch.

Memory Notes

Each storage controller has main memory that is used for the operating system and caching filesystem data. A separate, integrated battery-backed RAM module is used to provide stable storage for writes that may not have been written to disk.

Stable Storage

The WAFL filesystem logs writes and other filesystem data modifying transactions to the NVMEM memory. In an active-active configuration, as in the system under test, such transactions are also logged to the NVMEM on the partner storage controller so that, in the event of a storage controller failure, any transactions on the failed controller can be completed by the partner controller. Filesystem modifying CIFS/NFS operations are not acknowledged until after the storage system has confirmed that the related data are stored in NVMEM memory of both storage controllers (when both controllers are active). The battery-backed NVMEM ensures that any uncommitted transactions are preserved for at least 72 hours.

System Under Test Configuration Notes

The system under test consisted of 2 FAS3250 storage controllers and 14 storage shelves, each with 24 450GB SAS disk drives. The controllers were running Data ONTAP 8.1.2 software operating in 7-mode. The 2 storage controllers were configured in an active-active configuration and connected to their respective disk shelves in a multi-path high-availability (MPHA) configuration. The 14 disk shelves were connected to the storage controllers as 4 stacks of 2 shelves and 2 stacks of 3 shelves using 6 4-port SAS cards across both controllers. The failover was provided by the cluster failover software option provided over built-in 10GbE cluster interconnect. A 10GbE port from a dual-port 10 Gigabit Ethernet adapter in an expansion slot on each controller was connected to a Cisco Nexus 5548 switch providing access to clients. The ports had jumbo frames enabled.

Other System Notes

All standard data protection features, including background RAID and media error scrubbing, software validated RAID checksum, and double disk failure protection via double parity RAID (RAID-DP) were enabled during the test.

Load Generator Configuration Notes

All clients accessed all file-systems from all the available network interfaces.

Uniform Access Rule Compliance

Each load-generating client hosted 172 processes, accessing each filesystem from all the network interfaces and network paths to storage controllers. The flexible volumes were striped evenly across all the disks in the aggregate using all the SAS adapters connected to storage backend.
