SPEC SFS RELEASE 1.1 README FILE The principal documents for SPEC SFS Release 1.1 are: 1. The SPEC SFS Release 1.1 User Manual The SFS User Manual is found in the subdirectory labeled documents. This manual provides the basic information needed to get the benchmark running, including helpful hints for troublshooting. Also contained in the manual are all the SPEC SFS Release 1.1 Run and Reporting Rules. A postscript version of the manual is located in the file UserManual.ps. An ascii version of the manual is located in the documents file, USER_MANL. The raw version of the manual is located in the file, USER_MANL.tbl. If you wish to create a typeset copy using the local copies of nroff/troff/?roff, then follow this guideline: tbl documents/USER_MANL.mm | nroff -mm -Tlp | col -b -x > USER_MANL This preprocesses the table commands embedded in the document, runs the output through nroff using the System V -mm macros (Memorandum Macros) and directs nroff to format the output for a dumb line printer that can understand reverse column motions (but not ANSI escape sequences), this is then passed to the col command which strips out all reverse line feeds and backspaces and converts all tabs to white space. 2. The laddis(1) manpage The online manpage for 097.LADDIS, "$BENCH/src/laddis.1", gives a very thorough description of the laddis command and its options. You can create the manpage by running tbl $BENCH/src/laddis.1 | nroff -man > laddis.cat 3. The USENIX Association White Paper "LADDIS: The Next Generation In NFS File Server Benchmarking" is a USENIX White Paper providing an excellent discussion of the technical issues involved in developing 097.LADDIS and the rationale used to establish default 097.LADDIS workload parameter values. This paper has been included on the SPEC SFS Release 1.1 distribution tape in the documents directory. It is in postscript format in the file WhitePaper.ps. 4. The Server Configuration Paper "Server Configuration Requirements" is extracted from a SPEC Newsletter article by Brian Pawlowski. The paper expands on the run rule that addresses uniform access of filesystems by 097.LADDIS clients. This paper has been included on the SPEC SFS Release 1.1 distribution tape in the documents directory. It is in postscript format in the file ServConfig.ps. Postscript printing of the .ps files, UserManual.ps, WhitePaper.ps and ServConfig.ps can be done by a postscript printer using the lp command: lp -opostscript UserManual.ps
