SPECapc releases new UGS NX benchmark

WARRENTON, Va., March 1, 2006 -- SPEC/GPC’s Application Performance Characterization (SPECapc) project group has released new performance evaluation software for systems running UGS’ NX™ digital product development software.

SPECapc for UGS NX 3 uses data-intensive models that were donated to SPEC/GPC by the automotive industry. Completely new test sets are designed to exercise functionality and features used in day-to-day NX work. The benchmark generates results for graphics, CPU and disk I/O operations, as well as a composite number for total system performance. Operations tested include loading parts, rotations, zooms, pans, front and back clipping, modifying perspective parameters, full view generation, and different edge modes.

The new benchmark resulted from a collaborative effort among the automotive industry, UGS, and SPECapc.

“The process of developing this benchmark ensures that it is a realistic testing tool for users, the ISV and hardware vendors,” says Dan Bennett, SPECapc chair.  “The automotive industry generously donated an actual design model, UGS contributed the testing framework based on characteristic use of NX 3, and we integrated it with the proven SPEC methodology that helps ensure consistent results."

“We were pleased to work with SPECapc to develop this benchmark for NX,” says

Chris Brosz , vice president of technical operations , UGS. “It gives our customers an unbiased, reliable and repeatable tool to evaluate performance.”

SPECapc for UGS NX 3 is available for free downloading on the SPEC/GPC web site: www.spec.org/gpc. The SPECapc group also provides free benchmarks for systems running Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire 2.0, UGS’ Solid Edge V14, SolidWorks 2005, 3ds max 7 and Maya 6.5.
